JEE Main 2026 Eligibility Criteria

The following are the educational requirements for JEE Main 2026 for candidates willing to get admissions in B.E, B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Plan programs at the several NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs that are taking part through the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB).

  • Age Limit: There is no upper age limit. Candidates who passed their Class 12th exam in 2023, 2026, or are appearing in 2026 are eligible to apply.
  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have cleared Class 12th or an equivalent exam in the year 2023 or 2026. Appearing students are also eligible.
    • Students must have Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics as their compulsory subjects in Class 12th.
    • A minimum of 75% aggregate marks is required for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs (65% for SC/ST/PwD candidates).
  • Maximum Attempts: For three years in a row, a candidate may sit for JEE Main twice a year. Hence, a candidate can have six attempts to appear for the JEE Main 2026 exam.

JEE Main 2026 Exam Pattern

The JEE Main 2026 exam consists of three papers: Paper 1 (for B.Tech), Paper 2A (for B.Arch), and Paper 2B (for B.Plan). The details for each are as follows.

JEE Main 2026 Exam: Paper 1 (B.Tech Course)

  • Examination Mode: JEE Main Paper 1 for B.E or B.Tech courses is conducted as a computer-based online exam.
  • Duration: The duration of the exam is 3 hours.
  • Subjects: The exam covers topics from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • Types of Questions: Total 90 questions, with 20 questions in section A and 10 in section B in MCQ format.
  • Candidates can attempt 75 questions (300 marks) with 20 questions in section A and 5 questions in section B for each subject: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • Marking Scheme: Every correct answer carries 4 marks, while 1 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.

JEE Main 2026 Exam: Paper 2A (B.Arch Course)

  • Examination Mode: JEE Main 2026 Paper 2A for B.Arch courses is conducted in online CBT mode.
  • Sections of the Paper: JEE Main Paper 2A is divided into three parts.
    • Part-I: Mathematics (CBT mode)
    • Part-II: Aptitude Test (CBT mode)
    • Part-III: Drawing Test (Offline mode)
  • Duration: The total duration of the exam is 3 hours.
  • Mathematics: This section has 20 MCQs and 10 numerical value-based questions.
    • Candidates are required to attempt only 5 out of the 10 numerical-based questions.
  • Aptitude: The Aptitude section consists of 50 MCQs.
  • Drawing Test: This part assesses candidates’ sketching and drawing skills and includes 2 questions.
  • Marking Scheme:
    • Each correct answer in the Mathematics and Aptitude sections has 4 marks.
    • For incorrect answers, 1 mark is deducted for both MCQs and numerical-based questions.

Negative Marking: There is no negative marking for unanswered questions.

JEE Main 2026 Exam: Paper 2A (B.Planning Course)

  • Examination Mode: JEE Main 2026 Paper 2A for B.Planning courses is conducted in online CBT mode.
  • Duration: The exam duration is 3 hours.
  • Sections of the Paper: The exam comprises three parts – Mathematics, General Aptitude, and Planning Skills.
  • Mathematics Part: This section has 20 MCQs and 10 numerical value-based questions.
    • Candidates are required to attempt only 5 out of the 10 numerical-based questions.
  • General Aptitude Part: It consists of 50 MCQs.
  • Planning Skills Part: This part comprises 25 MCQ-based questions.
  • Marking Scheme: Every correct answer has 4 marks each, while 1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

Negative Marking: There is no negative marking for unanswered questions. Negative marking applies to both MCQs and numerical-based questions.

For Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Although the exam is designed so that each question has only one correct option, if it is later discovered that a question has more than one valid answer, it will be evaluated as follows:

  1. If the chosen option is correct or the most appropriate, the candidate will receive 4 marks (+4).
  2. If an incorrect option is selected, 1 mark will be deducted (-1).
  3. If the question is left unanswered or only marked for review without selecting any option, the score will be 0.
  4. If more than one option is ultimately confirmed as correct, then 4 marks (+4) will be given to every candidate who has marked any one of the correct options.
  5. If all options are considered correct, then 4 marks (+4) will be awarded to all candidates who attempted the question.

If, despite careful setting of the paper, any question has to be cancelled or dropped, full marks for that question will be granted to all candidates who appeared in that particular shift.

For Numerical Value Questions (Section B)

Negative marking is also applicable in Section B. If any error or discrepancy is identified after the answer key challenge and verification process, it will be resolved in this way:

  1. A correct numerical response will fetch 4 marks (+4).
  2. An incorrect numerical response will result in a penalty of 1 mark (-1).
  3. If the question is left unanswered or marked for review without entering a value, the candidate will get 0 marks.
  4. If a question is declared incorrect or is dropped, then 4 marks (+4) will be awarded to all candidates who appeared in that shift.
  5. Candidates must perform calculations using the constants provided (if any) in the question, and the final response should be rounded off to the nearest whole number.
